hoping one of you guys can help me - the left side of my tv is going purple. is this screen decay? i bought it about 3-4 years ago, and it's a sony projection tube hd tv. i have a ps3, and finally got an hdmi cable today. i plugged it in and set the display settings on the ps3. a couple of hours later and the left side of my screen is going purple. it is this way on all video inputs.
anyone know what this is? did my ps3 kill my tv?

Does your tv have a white wash setting? If you do it might remedy problem., if not it is probably the capacitors going on it. Best bet it is.... there are I think 3 of them, and there job is basically control colour filtration. Local repair shop should be able to replace it.

Found this too, could be the cause This discoloration is caused by a magnetic field generated by something near that corner of the screen. It could be you placed a speaker, or other electronic device with a power supply near that corner. Try moving the magnetic object away from the TV. Next, find a powerful magnet (got one on the fridge?) then do this> 1. place the magnet 8" from the center of the screen with the TV off. Then turn it on and at the same time move the magnet in a circular motion making gradually larger circles as you step back from the TV about 6 to 8 feet. set the magnet down away from the TV then do this> 2. Now turn off the TV. and walk towards it making gradually larger circles until your again 8" (inches) from the screen, at this point your circles should be as big as the screen. Then do this> 3. Draw the magnet in a circular motion gradually coming to the center, then step back slowly while making your circles larger until your again 6 to 8 feet from the TV. Put the magnet down away from the TV and go turn it on. Walla, fresh colorful new picture. This process is called Magnetic Degaussing. If this process dose not work for you, try asking your local Radio Shack for a degausser. They use to carry a powerful one that works off household current.

i dont think the ps3 did it trane... same thing happened to my dad's projection tv a year back... its something inside thats messing up the picture, like something demagnetized it (like snooch suggested). for my pops, the discoloration went away after a day or two, but came back a month later... he finally had to get it fixed by a repair guy.

Snoochie's advice could be the reason why ... the magnetic factor could certainly be the issue ... stereo speakers or game consoles are the biggest reason why it happens. But just to let you know, my old Phillips rear projection HDTV did something similar before it died.

thanks for the advice dudes. it actually went away after i gave the tv a rest for a couple of hours. it may have been a speaker that i had next to the tv... who knows. thanks again.
